Current Courses:

·        ‘Identity and Foreign Policy of the European Union’ (INTL 447):

This course analyzes in-depth three interrelated debates on European integration with their theoretical and policy implications. We begin with an interrogation of the ‘democratic deficit’ problem of the European Union. What standards of democracy should be applicable to the Union? How can the Union institutions and governance structure be further democratized? Secondly, building on the argument that a functioning democracy requires citizens that identify with European institutions, we investigate the debates on the construction of a European identity. How can the peoples of Europe identify more strongly with the European Union and its institutions? What can the European Union do in the construction of an identity as such? And finally, we turn to the discussion of the European Union on the world stage. We analyze the intricate relationship between identity and foreign policy. How and in what ways does the European Union impact world politics? How can it be more effective?

·        ·’Institutions and Politics of the European Union’ (INTL 330):

Not a day passes by when the European Union is not discussed in Turkey in one way or another. Yet, most of this discussion centers around the issue of Turkish accession. When it comes to understanding how the institutions of the European Union work and make decisions, and the issue areas and debates that concern European leaders and peoples, there is not enough of a discussion. This course aims to provide students with an informed understanding of the European Union, its history, institutions, and policy-making in different issue areas.
